Have a 1980 MGB and need help in properly wiring the distributor and coil.
Problem: How to wire a replacement Flame Thrower Distributor and Coil.
Existing Situation:
1. Currently, the original OEM distributor is not on hand.
2. The coil is stamped as a 1.5 ohm coil and the distributor is designed for a ballasted ignition system.
3. A 1.5 ohm Distributor resistor is in the circuit as shown in the above drawing.
4. The ballast wire is missing
5. The white-brown (WN) wire from the fuse box to the Distributor Resistor is missing.
6. The two white and light (WLG) wires going to the positive side of the coil are present. One is coming from the Starter motor and the other is I presume the one going to the ballast wire. I have not been able to locate the ballast end of this wire.
7. The red (R) lead from the distributor is connected to the positive side of the coil.
8. Two white and black (WB) wires are connected to the negative side of the coil. One wire is going to the Tach. The other wire is going to a three prong female connect. I believe this connector originally mated to the OEM distributor electronics unit.
9. The black (B) lead from the distributor is connected to the negative side of the coil.
10. The distributor resistor is wired as indicated in the drawing minus the ballast and the (WN) wire.
11. The female connector has three wires a white (W), (WB), and (BU) with the (W) and (WU) coming from the resister.
As currently wired is it safe to attempt engine start without causing damage to the electrical system. Are the missing wires required or not required.

Asking an electrical question on these later cars is something like a fart in church. I am in the middle of this whole process myself. I have attached the instructions I received with my coil and distributor with points. Hope this helps. Mark

Mr. Google provides this seven year old version of the MGB installation:
