I thought this moght be of interest to somebody: today I fitted my new heater valve, it´s from a VW Golf/Rabbit. It simply fits in the piping from the head to the heater and even the original cable can be reused with a bit of tinkering. All that is now missing is to fix the cable to the lever. For this the hole in the lever has to be enlarged to accept a choke cable trunion. That´s it.

Joern,

That looks like a very good solution and being from a VW it should be reliable, unlike the original Smith's unit.

Bruce.

Hi Robert, I haven't approached my heater restore as yet, but was curious what the problem is with these original, or after market heater valves, and do you have an idea of what should be done to improve their reliability.

Thanks, Chuck

New products in Nov issue of Enjoying MG. MGOC is now producing early MGC (manufactured prior to May of 68) heater tap fittings.
It includes the heater valve bracket (27H8841)that bolts to heater face and steel elbow (12B1963) which fits to the head.
Just another possible option.

MGOC was my source for the units with a 50% failure rate. FWIW.
