For years I drove my MGB not realizing the gear shift in neutral sets itself up for the first and second gear without any guidance from me. This is very healthy for the reverse gear since you don't have to search for second on a down shift from third to second. Also handy at a complete stop when in neutral, just push straight up. I thought this mite come in handy for some of the new MG owners. Dale

As a new owner, this had been one of my biggest frustrations. I get why it is that way, but my muscle memory sometimes forgets. Growing up with 5 speeds and daily driving a 6 speed has me used to neutral being between 3/4. I can go from a modern manual to a 3spd column shifter without issue but I still miss with the 3-2 downshift on the mg on occasion. I think I subconsciously pull the shifter to the left of neutral when going to second because that's how I'm used to a floor shifter working.
