I searched, but I am not seeing the answer. I am trying to check the level of the gear box oil on my 76 MGB. No Overdrive. Must the level be checked with the car level or with the front wheels in the air? I can't get under there otherwise. I checked it with the front wheels in the air and it appeared full, but thought I should level it out and quite a bit ran out. Which way is correct?

On English cars, you can check the level from inside the car. The tunnel has a bung just above the dip stick, it can be removed, and then the dip stick can be got at. I tied a piece of string to the handle of mine, just long enough to bring up through the hole in the tunnel and trap beneath the bung. This you will find easier the next time you make a reading of the level. The car must be level to take a reading if my memory serves me correct. I trust your cars across the pond are the same. Hope this helps someone. Kind regards,
Mark.
We will talk a little later when we are older.

If you have the side fill box, you can check the level with the car on the ground. Loosen and remove the plug (which admittedly may require lifting the car into the air and supporting with stands). Then (car on the ground), reach under the car and slip your finger into the hole. You can gauge how far below the hole the oil level is by feel. It should be as close to even with the hole as possible.

I get most of my work on Subaru, and some on my MG work at Budget Brake and Muffler in Victoria. Have excellent relationship with them. They've put my car on hoist for free in past and checked tranny oil.
Sometimes paying a bit of money is so much easier than raising car.
Now I'm off to garage to raise car to fix my OD solonoid wire leak!
