I fitted a new fuel tank today but on refitting the filler neck, new connector and clamps I find that the neck is not straight with a slight kink in it. There is also a minute gap above the filler neck on the outside of the body towards the top of the external rubber sealing ring. I can't remember how it looked before I started my resto. The clamps look fine and will stop any fuel leaking. It just doesn't look right. Your comments please! Keith

The filler neck has a bend to it, that is the normal situation IMO. Maybe the neck on the tank it attaches to has a sightly different bend to it and so is pushing the filler neck down?
You did not mention renewing the external sealing rubber ring, maybe a new one will get you the tighter fit you are looking for? eye rolling smiley

PS When I replaced my filler neck for a non-lockable cap with one suitable for caps with locks in I had to find the right position inside the large rubber hose for both.
By changing the depth of entry in the hose and the angle for the neck before tightening the two clamps you ultimately will find the best position for it...... smileys with beer

Thanks Don, I did change the outer sealing rubber for a new one. I will undo the clamps tomorrow and try to rearrange
the items to a better fit. More suggestions please! Keith

Well, in line to my earlier post on renewing the outer sealing rubber: did you compare the size of the old and the new rubbers before the change?
Sometimes newer parts from an aftermarket origin do not have the same precise dimensions the OEM ones had at the time of production. Just a thought.. eye rolling smiley

Bring up this Moss webpage:

You will see that there are very many "different" fuel filler necks, over the years; but, only a few choices for replacements.

If that were my MG, with limited choices, I would consider talking to a shop that does custom exhaust pipes.

Have them bend a steel tube to match the filler cap, and the fuel tank fitting, and then you can seal everything up with short pieces of "radiator hose" which should be able to handle the fuel vapor.
