That number is not an original MGA engine. It also doesn't match any known BMC engine based on this: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/engine/be100.htm
My engine number is also not known but is clearly a BMC engine that is identical in most respects to an MGA original. Yours may be the same. Does it look like a standard MGA engine? It might help to post a few pictures if you're not sure.
If it is BMC, I would guess two things from the engine number: the 15 would mean it's a 1500cc block. The L at the end may mean it is a Low compression engine. MGA is usually high compression. You will see the reason for both of those in the web page linked above.

Well, it is a BMC series "B" engine so it does look like it would fit in an MGA. The outside of a "B" series engine is pretty much the same except for minor variations. You said 15E was on the plate. MGA engines were 15G... What were the first cars that utilized the "B' series engine?

Have a look at my thread,"it's official restoration underway" and go to page 28. I have taken a photo of the engine block. It is from a 1500 engine of 1958 , take a look at the same area's on your engine and see if it differs from mine.

I just bought a 57 MGA with this engine number 15E-V-L 13960.
Can anyone give me any information for this engine.
Can anyone give me any information for this engine.
Can you post a closeup pic of the engine number plate?
If it was 15F it would be an Austin Metropolitan.

What marking are cast on both the head and block.?
Maybe I should make myself a little clearer. The arrow in the picture shows the date manufactured. to the left of that casting is more numbers cased in the block. This provides more info on the engine block. On the head there are numbers just like this casted. take a look at and let us know what the numbers say. You're going to need a mirror when looking ar the bock's number
