The absolutely correct way to paint the late MGB engine is to paint the engine block with orange primer.
Assemble the engine complete with air pump, oil filter and alternator.
Then while turning your head away. Wave black spray paint in the general direction of the assembled engine.
The images are of an engine with 30 miles on it. Exactly as it came out of the factory. Even the oil filter hasn't been changed.

Interesting...my '80 B engine is red/orange, very similar to the body color (see photo). As far as I know it is original - had 28,130 miles on it when I bought it, and the previous owner said nothing about a rebuild. Maybe the original black color has disappeared and what's showing is primer??
Edit: didn't get my message written before Kelvin chimed in. Obviously mine is mostly primer!
Edit #2: photo attached
'80 MGB, de-smogged, Factory OD, Schlemmerized 25D distributor, HIF4's, Bell Stainless exhaust, VTO wheels from Hap, Bits4Brits relay kit, Classic Auto LED's, Speedhut tach & speedometer
