Engine Painting, front and back plate potentially stupid question?

My block and head are painted, assembly well underway. This is probably an utterly trivial question, but is it OK to paint the entire front and back plates, including the parts that would essentially be internal to the engine? I don't want to paint these parts after assembly as I want the gaskets to show and not have paint on them. It also seems a bit painstaking to try and stencil around the internal bits if you know what I mean? Thanks for setting me straight.
This is my first real attempt at a rebuild and all goes along swimmingly until suddenly there is pause for thought and a question that does not appear to be answered anywhere!

Don't paint what is internal engine areas.
Don't paint gasket mating surfaces either.

And don't paint the surface where the starter mates to the rear plate. Good ground.

Thanks very much! Left to my own devices I was about to make a stupid mistake. I'll assemble then paint this bits afterwards with suitable masking.

Simon,
Hold the plates net to the engine and mark them for masking tape, mount the timing cover over masking tape and follow the outside edge of the cover with a razor blade and remove the excess. Do this for any parts you want to paint for a professional job.
