This is my first post to the Forum so please be kind with your advice.

I have recently purchased an MG TF 135 80th Anniversary edition Number 39 and going through the process of tidying it up. I am sure you have all been through this with a new toy. So I have a lot to learn about the car. The first one was that it has very big brakes for a little car.

My query tonight is that the inside handle does not operate the door release and I have found that the small white lever that attaches to the cable from the inside handle and the rod from the outside handle is broken. So it operates from the outside but not the inside.

The question is can I buy one of these or do I have to buy the whole lock and which includes the central locking mechanism. I am in Australia so is right hand drive and I can not just walk down the road for parts.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hi Apples and welcome.

A great place to look for the part you need and to get the part number is Rimmer Bros' website, http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/SubCategory--MGF-MG-TF--m-1612 Their parts diagrams are excellent.

I think I know the piece you are talking about and I do not believe that it is available as a separate part to buy. Your best bet is probably to find one in a local breakers yard or from one of the MGF/TF breakers in the UK.

Hi Apples and I'll second Mark's welcome.

I recently had to change the exterior door handle on my LHD MGF and ended up purchasing the parts from Brown & Gammons in the UK although I think you will find the parts you need listed here on Rimmer Brothers website: http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID000122

There's a fair selection of MGFs in wreckers. For example, the Land Rover specialist near me (Adelaide) has half a dozen covering the full range of MGFs, even an RV8 and a box of bits that are all that remain of a ZR160. I'm happy to help if I can though I reckon you'd find what you need in Queensland.

Thanks to all for your advice. I did manage to find a complete mechanism and have installed it but now I can't unlock the door. The remote operates and the manual door lock button goes up but then pulls back down again. The passengers door works. But once in the car I can't manually lift the locking button. Can't find any thing in the manual.
Do the mechanism have to be mated to the key fob.

Yep tried that but for some it may not be as easy as it used to. So open the other door and scramble over. Bit girly but can go for a drive,

I'm not 100% certain but I don't think that the locks are mated, it might be a faulty replacement mechanism.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but Richard's comment about a broken RV8 caught my eye.

Just sent you a PM, Richard.

Have you tried it with the door card removed? If the pin is hanging up on the door card it will make the lock go jiggy.

And don't forget the traditional 'put something in backwards' foul up, remembering that if it was obvious, you wouldn't have got it wrong in the first place.

I have heard of door locks unlocking and them immediately relocking and I think it was due to micro switches within the lock assembly having dirty contacts. Is it possible to take the part of the replacement lock mechanism, fix the original lock mechanism and re-install it?

Guys, thanks again.

Try this one!
Went to go for a drive, and yes climbed over the door, but alas the battery quite flat. Too much radio and repairing but not enough driving, so put on charge over night. And guess what the mechanism worked. Clearly the mechanism needed more power to activate.

But the reason for the job still exists, the door will not open from the inside. This time however the cable pulls out of the handle so should be a simple fix.

Tomorrow the handle comes off again to reconnect the cable.

Again thanks for your assistance.

Hi Mark,

Great idea as the only problem with the old lock was the broken toggle activator for the handles. Unfortunately, I could get the toggle off the new one so went with the new one. And it appears to be a low battery problem.
