I just changed out my fuel sender unit. The old ones float filled and lost its buoyancy.
I was able to change out the sender without jacking up the car. When I turned the ignition on the fuel gauge reads 1/8th tank. Does that seem about right?
PS: I replaced the old sending unit with Moss new "modern type".

I guess that all depends on how much fuel is in the tank, not being a wisenheimer. How much fuel is in the tank, if none it should show empty.
