Does any one know of a source on this side of the pond for these crimp on bullet connectors.

For all of the wiring bits for our British cars, my vote goes to British Wiring.

They have all the components that should come with a new harness and all the components that you should renew when installing a new harness.

Speaking of harnesses, British Wiring supplied my harness complete with special circuits at a very nominal charge.

They will also make up special harness to your design. In my case, they integrated a "flash to pass" circuit into the harness of my 1600.

Just a happy customer-unpaid endorsement

Don, That's a nice looking 1600. I know there are a few differences between a 1500 and a 1600 (largely electrical), but is putting the Direction Indicator Relay Unit to the heater shelf one of them? Or was that your idea?

With regard to BW...here's an exchange between them and myself earlier this year.

On July 20th I wrote:

Hello,
I am restoring a '57 MGA. I need the wiring harness that runs from the engine compartment back to the fuel pump and tail lights.

I don't know if you already know the details for this harness, but it has a braided cloth sheath, and the wires are plastic or vinyl covered. I do have the old original harness for use as template.

Is there anyway you could provide me with an approximate price for this harness? If needed I could count the number of wires (I think it is only 5) and give you an overall length.

A few hours later I received this reply:

Hi Bob,

We keep wiring harnesses in stock for MGA's. However we only have them as main sets including the main/dash harness, and body harness.

Thanks, Josh

No mention of a possible custom harnesses. I guess they like you more than me.

Thanks Gary,

I don't believe the VB part (14-989) is like the one I have shown. The VB part looks like it would require a special ($60 and up) crimping tool.

I have the main harness for my A, but I purchased it from a guy on Craigslist, and I'm missing the sub-harnesses. One running down the left hand side of the car to the rear, and the one running from side to side across the back.

These would be easy to make were it not for the bullets. The harness that I do have was made in the UK by a company called Autosparks and sold by Robinson. But neither have replied to emails inquiring about purchasing sub-harnesses or bits like the bullets.

The harness that I do have uses bullets like the one shown, that do not require a special crimping tool.

I did find this company http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/product_list/6. Their crimp on bullet looks exactly like the ones used on the harness that I have.

I'm hoping I can find the same over here.

Bob,

The wiring harnesses supplied by British Wiring (to us) to the best of my knowledge are supplied to them by AutoSparks in the UK. The needed harness that you mentioned is a separate standard sub-harness that runs from just below the starter pull switch along the passenger side rail and terminates at the rear spring shackle. It sounds like Josh needs more information in as much as he is not that familiar with the MGA sub-harnesses. In fact, it was Josh who took my order for my special harness for what you refer to as a indicator relay unit which is actually a Lucas "flash to pass" SB40 relay. Getting back to Josh: there is no reason once explained that he cannot provide you with this standard sub-harness. In my case, I had to completely design the harness, the lengths and the colors for them to make up. Once supplied, they were able to integrate it as a special order (it was less than $100) The end result was that I was able to use the ultra rare SB40 relay with Lucas cover and switch that I had been sitting on for many years that is seen on a few if any MGA's. Good luck Don

Don, Great looking installation and very clever idea.

I finally received a reply from Autosparks and they offered the two sub-harnesses that I'm missing for ₤40.00 plus shipping (and whatever the exchange rate is).

Seems more than reasonable to me, so I have ordered them from Autosparks.

Bob,

Happy to see that you were able to procure the two missing sub-harnesses. A word of experience if you don't mind is to make sure that all of the two and four junction bullet connector's are "as new" (oxide free) or new. As you can imagine, the harness that runs along the passenger's side rail is more exposed to the elements than any other harness. Plugging new wire ends into old connector's is asking for trouble. Don't forget to encapsulate everything in die-electric grease. Last by not least, the side harness has a critical ground connection eyelet that needs a good connection. Happy Thanksgiving. Don

Don,

Thanks for the suggestion, but no worries, I have all new connectors and fresh tube of dielectric grease. I've had MG's off and on since 1973, so I do know about the perils of bullet connectors and the environment. I know these cars are simple by today's standards, BUT man there are still a lot of wires!

Bob,

I love the color! It certainly contributes to the character and the lines of the MGA. No turkey yet. It's a warm day in central Massachusetts by November standards so Mary Jane has me cleaning windows before the hordes show up mid afternoon to drink my beer and eat turkey. I'm about to escape and take my golden, Hayden for a walk down the rail trail behind my house.
