That device is a little too much after the fact for my liking. I can certainly think of other uses for it, though.

Discouraging a potential thief is likely the most effective, and the one MGB I own which someone might consider stealing has a removable steering wheel.
I'd like to think that when seeing a locked cap where the steering wheel goes, they'll hopefully look elsewhere.

Your title is completely false!

High tech solutions to simple problems piss me off.

"Theft Security" makes car hard to steal, not easy to find after theft. So you locate it 10 minutes after theft, wrapped around a pole and total write-off.

Think PREVENTION!

I've mentioned before that the only thing I've ever worried about theft in regard to my MG is my parking pass when I drive it to work.

Since then, I've solved that problem by paying an extra $10 for a sticker tag. The sticker stays on the windshield of my B, and the hang tag stays in my other car.

A manual transmission combined with a manual choke when cold and some of the hot-starting "quirks" of my car are-I figure-enough deterrent for a would be thief.

Aside from that, if I'm feeling especially paranoid I'll pull the hot wire off the coil or the HT lead off the distributor. Both are obscure enough these days that I figure your casual thief wouldn't know to look for them. The only problem I have is that sometimes I forget to reconnect them and spend a minute scratching my head as to why my car won't start smiling smiley . I don't know how many times I've been working in/around the distributor and forgotten to put the rotor back on, reconnect the LT lead, reconnect the HT lead, inadvertently knocked one of the leads off the coil, or anything else that could potentially happen. I've also been surprised at times when I didn't get one of the cap clamps snapped all the way down and the engine actually ran reasonably well even with the cap sitting not quite level.

After taking reasonable precautions, if someone steals my car I'll simply take the insurance proceeds and get another. Not irreplaceable.

Forgot about the stick shift part. According the news, many crooks around here doesn't know how to operate one.
Ironic, in a way, that they can get into a locked vehicle, overcome a steering wheel lock and the ignition switch of a modern vehicle, but can't figure out how to drive a manual trans.

From what I read about this, it only works finding an object within a range of about 100 feet, the limit of a blue tooth broadcast.

That means you have to have a smart phone connected to the internet (what's the going rate these days?) and alternate wheels readily available (taxi?).

Then you have to contend with the gorilla who swiped it if he is still with the car or the car is in their chop shop or in the middle of a very quick paint job. Somehow I don't think they are friendly folks who smile a lot and would offer you a coffee. I'd leave it for the cops.

My daughter will be driving soon and this looked like such a great idea! That's until I understood what "Crowd GPS" is. As I understand it, the tag must be within 100 feet of another user's phone and the "Tracker Crowd GPS" network will send you the location! It's NOT GPS. I thought it sounded too cheep!

It may be good for my wife who can NEVER find her keys though! sad smiley

I bought something very similar to this a year ago that also uses a phone app. I used it in my wallet , key ring etc to find them around the house. It can work out in the real world but only if thousands of people subscribe to the app. The theory is that if anyone is close to your stolen car/item and you have flagged it as stolen it shows up on their device and you can report it. Good idea if everyone subscribes to form a network. The one I had only lasts a year then the battery expires. You have to have a subscription for the, to send you a discounted new one every year. I think mine was called the "square"

If you want to discourage the thieves 100%, this is the best product out there.

I guess the good old fashioned kill switch is out of favor in the modern world?
