I've been pondering buying a trailer to haul my Sprite and my Mini around when need be. I don't do that very often; only when there is a break down, and about once a year I haul the Sprite to Colorado. Would also be nice to be able to use it as a utility trailer.

For the most part, the car haulers that I can find are HUGE because they're intended to haul big American cars or modern cars.

A Spridget is 4.5 feet wide, and 11.5 feet long, and clocks in at like 1,700 pounds. The Mini is two feet shorter.

Does anyone know of a small and lightweight car hauler that would work for British cars? I've been hunting online, but wanted to see what people thought.

Could I use a utility trailer or large motorcycle/ATV trailer as opposed to an actual car hauler? Trailers are not my area of expertise, so if that may be a terrible idea.

Any thoughts from people who know about such things would be appreciated.

Ryan:

I would talk to one of the local trailer manufactures about building a single axle car trailer based on one of their larger utility / lawn service trailers.

My input for what it's worth.

I bought a 7' x 16' dove tail single axle utility trailer form a local builder. $800.00. I did have to modify the deck to get the cars up high enough to open the doors. I also found that the lawn mower ramp is too steep for my CBB GT and the Morris. To solve that problem I got a pair of reinforced aluminum loading ramps on sale at Tractor Supply. It works good and is easy to pull. I also had to make some anchors for hold down straps.

I've hauled a Midget, Morris Minor, MGB, Morris Marina, and a Magnette on the trailer. It's also useful for hauling junk around.

I bought a utility trailer (landscape?) with a flip down expanded metal ramp for the BE, single axle, tows great, I have to use the side ramps (made for RTVs) and some blocks to get the ramp to a good angle.
Ryan-When/Where in CO do you go every year? we might be able to meet up- I'm outside Denver.

Yard equipment hauler. These take riding lawn mowers, etc & are rated 2000lbs load and higher. They have built in ramps. I have seen these new for $1100 with a 3500lb axle..

I got a 5'x12' flatbed Triton trailer for my Midget, aluminum, since I haul it with a 4-cylinder Tacoma. Towed it to NC and back, went well. And 9' aluminum folding ramps to load it.

Mark,

Headed out for the Hagery Silver Summit. 2nd year headed there, and expect to make many more. I highly recommend it, particularly if you're in the area.

I have a 12 foot mowing trailer. The MG is 13 foot so I cut off the header rail. So far I have hauled it 12,000+ miles behind the RV:

We haul a pair of motorcycles on them as well:

Thanks! I was kind of hoping I could use a trailer like that, but didn't want to make a mess of things either.

I will say I was leaning toward a tandem axle utility trailer, but seems like folks don't have any issue with single axle trailers bearing the weight of a Spridget.

I have access to a vehicle that will haul most anything, but would like to be able to haul it with my 4 cylinder Subaru. If I go single axle, I should be well within the weight limit.

One thing that helps, I screw a board down for a tire stop. Makes it easy to hit the same spot on the trailer every time.

one of the members here (I forget who) has a custom built trailer that I think would be perfect. If I ever have one built this is the way I'd go.

The beauty of the U-Haul trailer is the left fender swings out of the way so you can open the door on the car.

X2 they are heavier that a dead preacher.

This is mine... well balanced, well mannered, and light weight enough it can be pulled by a 2 liter 4 banger (with a Sprite on it)... follows you like a lost puppy.
