Break lights come on with the ignition

Sorry if anyone has noticed how many threads I've been starting, new to the forum and I have a lot of questions!
So I've just installed my newly rebuilt engine after a year of the car being sat without one, and now the break lights are giving me trouble. They turn on and off with the ignition, and applying the break pedal does nothing to affect them.
Can anyone tell me where the switch for the break lights is, or if there is something else that could be causing the problem?
Thanks,
Dylan

Dylan,
What year and type of car are you asking after? Depending on the model year, the brake switch is either at pedal box or at brake pipe union. mounted on flitch panel.

Life's most persistent and urgent question is, "What are you doing for others?"

Dylan - If the brake light switch is a hydraulic switch, mounted in a 'T' fitting on the inside right fender, then you have a shorted switch. If yours is a later car with the brake light switch being mounted on the pedal box, the most likely scenario is that the switch is not screwed far enough into the pedal box for the brake pedal to push the plunger in to open the switch. It could also be a situation where the pedal is missing some spacers on the pivot bolt such that it is not lining up with the switch. Quick check would be to remove the switch from the pedal box and sight through the mounting hole to see if the pedal extension is in line with the middle of the hole.

Hi, sorry for late reply.
It's a 72 mgb gt.
It's hard to tell for sure but I think that the break lights come on when the engine gets hot, not just when the ignition is on. I assume this is still caused by the same problem, when the break fluid heats up. Is it possible to adjust the switch on the 72 or does it need replaced?
Thanks
Dylan
