If this is something to be used daily/weekly, then I would go for an used MAC CF17 valve spring compressor or equivalent by KD or another rebuild tool company. Not too big and not too small. The tool trucks rarely have one on them anymore. Stepped into 2 in the past few years and they laughed at me. Told me they haven't carried them for years. Only us old car nuts used them anymore.

If this is something once in a while, or maybe only once, I would go to one of the local box stores and see if they will rent a valve spring compressor to you. I bought one of the Advance stores rentals a decade back because I needed one at the track and mine was in the shop at home.

Thanks Mike,

I decided to give this inexpensive one a try. Just ordered. I'm hoping to only need it once and a while :-)

Not alot of the off the shelf unit work on the A series heads, they are just too big to work on A series heads. Years ago I was racing on Team Mini Mania, and winning a lot of races, and getting lots of store credit, so I got one of this from Mini Mania.

I did one mod to it, I welded a long piece of pipe to the handle to give me better leverage. It served me well for many years on many a head , I finally thrashed it using on MGB heads. I thought about getting another one though, just for use A series. Overall I like this unit.

Hope this helps.

Very similar to the one I had 35 years ago. I wish I still had it.

I just got one from Cornwell that looks pretty nice. I haven't used it yet, but will give an update when I do.

I have just gotten my first experience with a valve compressor. I bought it at Sears. Worked fine, as far as I know.
