This one is a little tricky.
A figure is shown, two concentric circles one considerably larger than the other. The smaller circle is shaded.
Question
In the figure shown, both circles have the same center, and the radius of the larger circle is R. If the radius of the smaller circle is three units less than R, which of the following represents the area of the non shaded region?
so Area of R=πR2
Area of smaller circle=π(r-3)2
Area non shaded region=(πR2)-(π(r-3)2)
=π(R-(r-3))2
This would be the answer, or maybe =πR2-π(R-3)2
... if I typed that out right in doing so it looks like this: = π R [ s u p ] 2 [ / s u p ] - π ( R - 3 ) [ s u p ] 2 [ / s u p ]
The answers given are EXACTLY as follows:
A. R2
B. (R-3)2
C. R2-32
D. R2 - (R-3)2
That's right Pi does not even appear in the answers, nor do exponents!
Oh....
And the "correct" answer according to AccuPlacer? C. R2-32. Even if you pop the exponents back in it is impossible. R2-32
These tests are beyond poorly worded they are fundamentally flawed.
Now get a load of this next one:

The Blue Team scores one fewer than twice the Red team. IF the Red team scores X points, which expression represents the total number of points scored by both teams?
Simple right? Blue team scored x points red team scored 2x-1 points, total points is x+2x-1 = 3x-1 right?
possible answers are:
A. 2X-1
B. 2X
C. 3X-1
D. 2(N-1)
I am guessing C!
NOPE! According to the test the total number of points scored by BOTH TEAMS is A.
I tried to contact Accuplacer and there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY TO CONTACT THEM ABOUT THE CONTENTS OF THE TEST.

Well you're right.
The BLUE Team scores 1 less than twice Red (X) thus Blue Score 2X-1 Answer A
Total Score is Blue 2X-1 + Red 1X = 3X-1 = Answer C
Chris Howells
1968 MGB Purchased already dis-assembled but which is largely back together so I'm a lot less ignorant.

73 MGB. Tires: Round, black, hold air. Oil: Sometimes old, sometimes new...always slippery. Oil filter: Yellow, usually full of oil. Carbs: 2 SU HIF. Distributor: Yes. Headlights: Not that bright but bright enough. A bunch of other stuff most cars have but not really important enough to itemize. Oh, wait...it has a cool sounding exhaust with stickers on the chrome tips. Really slays the ladies...

Michael - Are you trying to get into college and using the internet drones to pass your test? - (LOL)
I hear it happens on Redit a lot. Also you might get the right answers over there. Younger crowd and as we all know math has changed a lot. We now give gold stars for "trying" and it's more important to understand the question than get the answer right - LOL...
If we had this kind of math in the 60s we probably would have missed the moon by thousands of miles...
The goal - Reliable summer driver interspersed with mechanical tinkering...
Motto - "Driving fifty in the twisties..."
On Mods - It's your damn car - Do what you want. Haters gonna hate...
On SUVs - Drive your B like a soccer mom is texting her friends about how she wants to kill you...

Believe it or not I have an appointment to discuss this with a 'representative' at the end of the week.
... I never really went to college, married young, raised 5 kids, two with culinary degrees, one cosmetologist became phlebotomist, wasn't satisfied became a nurse, one cabinetmaker , and an automotive engineer, divorced, met and married Tamara, her 6 kids did their schooling, one law school left inthe last year and started an HVAC efficiency programming company, one (about to become) a PA, A senior programmer for Dell, a librarian (left the library to drive, has CDL and loves the open road over the library he always wanted to be in, one working on an avionics degree, and the last is well on her way to he BS Literature, then Tamara went back to school, she will complete her Masters in Psychology round Christmas or early next year. I am now semi retired so, yes, my turn to go take a few classes and catch up on what I didn't keep up in. Chemistry, Physics, Cosmology. Conversations with friends who teach these subjects show that I am well behind current knowledge.
Might take Italian or Spanish. Be interesting to regain a language I haven't spoken in 20 or 30 years.

Anyone curious what happened when I met up with them last week?
They told me the link for the prep test has gone to the same document for 8 years. It has never been updated since it was first posted. No one ever complained or contacted them about it. They removed the document, the link now returns a 404 error. they are reviewing the document and will post a new test before the end of September.
I though it was a good sign, but still it will take them over a month to create another 10 question sample test?? I could have "fixed" the document in about 20 minutes, including a fix of a couple typos, and set it back up functional.
Anyway, that is one of three tests in which I found errors.
