The question asks:
What is √-3
That would be read "What is the square root of negative three?"
(I found the √ character but can only paste it not type it.)

Remember you cannot type in an answer, only select A,B,C or D.
I selected C "undefined."
The test key said, and this is a direct quote:
"Your answer of undefined is incorrect. The correct answer is is undefined."
It actually reads "is is undefined."
so. What is the square root of -3?

I was taught that the square root of -1 is defined as i, indeterminate, imaginary, a useful concept that allows some problems to be "solved"
In electrical engineering it is defined as j which does have practical outcomes,e.g. when using a capacitor as a voltage dropping device, in AC work, the power loss comes out at jsomething. This is an imaginary number and doesn't exist, so the power loss is imaginary. The capacitor runs cool, unlike a resistor to do the same.

well I selected undefined which is US lingo for indeterminate.
Which is very inaccurate lingo. Undefined means exactly that.....it does not yet have a definition. Whereas indeterminate (cannot be calculated) is a finite definition.

can't help it that's what the books call it.
There is a LOT of stuff in the good ol' US of A that is said one way but doesn't mean what the words do, such as Left and Right. Rite and wrong.
It's a weird country where black is white and what's hot is cool.
What's in is not only out but it can be far out.
What's mod is retro.
And most importantly, apparently what is historical makes people hysterical, and it is no laughing matter.

Impossible to have the square root of a negative number as two negatives multiplied would produce a positive.
As others have pointed out, not impossible. Don't be fooled by the term "imaginary" either; i is a very real part of our universe.
