I'm about to pull the engine out of my daughter's '72 MGB to change the clutch/pressure plate/bearing, and replace the rear seal and oil pan gaskets; is there anything else I should be thinking about "while I'm at it"? I will also be adding a fan shroud, having the radiator hot-tanked, and replacing the heater control valve, but just wondering if there is something else that can only be done with the engine out. Everything else is working fine.

Hoping to get it out and back in pretty quickly so I can get back to my other project, so I want to make sure I'm addressing everything to ensure a trouble-free summer. Well, as much as we can expect from a 45 year old LBC.

It's easiest to replace the clutch hose without and engine in the way, but if it looks good, don't open that can of worms.

Motor mounts, trans mount, speedisleeve since you're doing the rear seal.
Drain and fill trans 20w50 conventional oil
Be sure to use a clutch alignment tool
Don't over tighten oil pan bolts
Use the improved Viton crank seal
Might want to do side cover seals easier with engine out
Consider TR7 5 speed clutch disc along with AP mgb pressure plate
Lasts years longer

Thanks Chris and Rob! I already have the "upgraded" rear seal from Moss, along with the "heavy duty clutch kit", the clutch alignment tool, as well as the upgraded mounts (main and rear).

I changed the side cover gaskets last fall. I also replaced the slave cylinder, and a few other little odds and ends. Is the speedisleeve a necessity, or a nice-ity? As far as the engine bay, it only needs cleaning/degreasing and a small touch up of paint where the old clutch system leaked a bit of hydro fluid.

There is exactly zero in the MGB shop manual about using triumph clutch parts. I will assume that remark a joke. ha ha.

The speedi sleeve may not be necessary, but the only way to find out is not to use one, then have the rear seal keep leaking...engine out again. Cheap insurance.

Remember when using a speedi sleeve to wrap some tape around the edge, to protect the seal, when fitting.

So if it not a joke, how about some explanation of the why it would be better? Most people do not equate a longer lasting clutch with a better performing clutch, as the suggestion notes. Sorry If I offended your lordship. You are proposing doing things outside the MGB manual and that simply sounds insane until you explain yourself. We await your godly and royal proclamation on the matter ohlord!

Guy I just did almost the exact same thing on mine over the last week. In progress of replacing rear main seal (going to post about the speedi sleeve also) but it looks like from all other questions on this is a "do it while you can" thing. The only other thing I did was have the rad flushed and pressure tested, and had a drain valve added.

If you've ever had any issues with the rear freeze plug now is the time to deal with it.

If you don't have a groove worn in your crank, it isn't a necessity.

I'd check the propeller shaft universal joints. Buy one (or two). If you don't need them now you will sooner or later. Also, the two rubber bushings on the back of the transmission near the mounts may have become oil soaked and very soft.
