So in the first serious under-bonnet effort since owning (about 2 weeks) I dig up the "parts box" that PO gave me. I was able to identify most of the stuff I need (stuff missing from the car but these two bits stumped me.

I browsed the Moss catalog bit but then kept getting diverted reading posts and not working on the car so I figured I would leverage the experts here...

The silver bit looks like a fuel system part.

The black bit is clearly a cover of some kind but I could not find a logical place that it would go.

Help and thanks in advance.

Silver bit is the fuel condenser that goes in the trunk on the passenger side wall. It connects to the gas tank and the charcoal cannister in the engine bay.

The black part looks like the cover for the fuel pump that stick out of the bottom of the trunk against the wall behind the passenger.

Both come from the trunk (boot).

The round silver object hangs on the passenger side trunk wall and captures fuel fumes from the gas tank.

The square black object protects the fuel pump where it protrudes into the front wall of the trunk

In any debate, the side which strays from civil discussion is usually the side that lacks confidence in its debate position or in the merit of their arguments. Making personal attacks on the opponents instead of staying on the subject is also a sign of weakness.

Anyone who feels compelled to respond in kind to any perceived slight is often suffering from narcissism.

Brilliant! You guys rock!

Follow up queston - PO took the fuel condensor off for some reason. It appears to be a closed unit (not serviceable) - so is there any check for it before I reinstall it? I presume it should flow air if I blow in one of the tubes?

This explains the loose vent tube in the boot that is stuck through a drain hole to the road - LOL...

I hope the tube running forward is there and complete...

I just love to see my name in print, so I'm going to say evaporation tank from the trunk, and fuel pump cover from the trunk or boot also.

I've always wondered how a simple question like this can get 4,237 answers. Hell, might as well join the crowd.!!!smiling bouncing smiley

This car is now very nearly completely done. Sure to find something else, but not now.........And 12 years later, I'm starting to fix things that were new when we built the car. It's pretty well de-bugged!

You might need to wonder WHY he took it off? Maybe the steel line running from the evap tank to the engine compartment carbon canister was blocked not getting venting. By putting the vent hose outside the trunk he eliminated fumes in the trunk and at the same time solved the petrol tank vent problem. Maybe..

Very likely that the vent tube going to the charcoal canister is plugged with corrosion, the only cure being to replace it. Ethanol and other things cause rust in the pipe, and, as John mentioned, I vented to the outside for that reason, and when I get to it (other priorities) I will replace the tubing to the canister.
