I read a bunch of threads about smog gear removal but didn't find any with photos. Also don't think one has ben posted too recently.

Not looking to be judged about this. Everything is going in a box for (maybe) reinstall at some point but for this stage of my "renewal" it's better for me to have this stuff off and stored away.

I am leaving the charcoal can as it's a passive system with no moving parts to break.

- So photo 1 is the before shot of the right side.
- I pulled air manifold, carb hot air box, hot air box shroud, gulp valve and air pump.
- Found the front manifold nut loose! Tightened it and checked the rest. The back one was also loose!
- I was please to find no bound up bolts or nuts - everything came apart really easy.
- Photo 2 is right side after - I have yet to pick up the manifold plugs and some rubber plugs for various vacuum tubes
- Photo 3 is the left side after gear removal - hot box, shroud and gulp valve.
- Photo 4 is all the gear on the bench prior to careful boxing and storage.

Probably going to source a K&N filter and store the ugly black box away. Dual carb conversion is tempting but probably in the distant future...

Roger that...

Because this car is so original and so complete I have decided to make no irreversible mods.

Anything I do will be stock or "stock-like" or "invisible" - i.e. internal engine mods.

When I get this one where I want it (Daily Driver not show car) I may get a straight bodied one that has already been altered as a pallette to play the modification game...

If you are keeping the ZS carb you can not change out the air filter. John Twist discusses it in one of his videos on the ZS. There is something about the resistance of the air flow that the OEM air filter box creates that is matched and balanced to the carb.

Sorry - Still acronym challenged as a newbie.

ARO?

TCSA?

Keeping the canister for sure...

Thanks. I'll have to dig that video up and reconcile the fact that Moss sells a K&N for the ZS175-CD.

Hmmm...

Just to clarify, it is the air filter housing "the ugly black box" that can not be changed.

This is K&N listing of compatible parts from the K&N Website.

Yup - I understand what you are saying.

But what Moss is selling (I think) is this - http://www.summitracing.com/oh/parts/knn-56-1620/applications/

So someone thinks a replacement filter housing is OK...

Modern cars self adjust their fuel delivery to compensate for differing airflows.....

None computerized cars like ours it's up to you to correct the fuel flow if you dramatically
change the airflow.........K&N are simply saying this filter fits that particular carb....
I doubt very much they have actually tested it, they make hundreds of different filters......
The real solution is a rolling road session....

Thanks for that. I definitely have a lot to learn about the MG/ZS carb and intake characterstics.

Reprofiling needle valves doesn't seem worth it in the short term...

The UBB (Ugly Black Box) stays for now...

Prolly a good thing as I have two new spare filter elements for it...

OK - I am really not that "complain about the DPO" kinda guy but WTF? I had to post this one...

I reckon if have to keep the UBB at least I am gonna clean it up and paint it...

So I pull it off and it rattles. I look inside and find a freakin' spark plug inside the plenum after the filter element - How the frick did it get in there? - And the worst part is it doesn't even fit an MGB!

Maybe PO was told the intake air needs to mix with spark for combustion to occur?

So that's a spark plug in the UBB and a brand new distributor cap in the passenger side fender well...

Note the "super groovy" choke cable that is held on with tie wraps and does absolutely nothing to actuate the choke.

I can't wait to see what I find next. I am doing sparky stuff this evening - that's gonna be hilarious...

We now resume our regularly scheduled programming - carry on...

Send that ZS to the metal recyclers, and get some SU's you won't believe the difference.

I've done 3 cars now, and each one amazes me.

But keep that emissions crap. Some people are (still) moving into California! smiling bouncing smiley

This car is now very nearly completely done. Sure to find something else, but not now.........And 12 years later, I'm starting to fix things that were new when we built the car. It's pretty well de-bugged!
