Greetings
I began aligning the front end on my 76 Midget after reassembling the steering components.
The steering wheel turns 2 1/4 turns lock to lock. When I turn the steering wheel to the left it takes one turn to lock, but when turning left, it takes 1 1/4 turns to lock. I am assuming that it should turn the same number of turns left and right. If so what needs to be done to correct the problem.?
The split on the lower end of the steering column over the pinion is straight up as it should be.
There is not binding when I slid the steering column onto the pinion it was a nice slip fit.
I am going back out to the shop now to see if I can see what is going on

if the steering wheel is straight ahead when the lower clamp "split" is facing up, then the tie rod ends are probably not adjusted evenly (take a look at how many threads are exposed beyond each one - odds are you'll see they aren't even, creating this issue. Center the rack by re-adjusting the TRE so the same threads are sticking out each end.
After you fix it at the rack (and re-set the toe), then you'll pull the column off of the rack pinion and rotate it until the wheel/split are both straight ahead again, and slide that back onto the now properly centered rack.

I did as you suggested and everything is as it should be. I did notice that the boot on the tie rod ends, which have never been on the road and are less than two years old have deteriorated a lot. I can see the metal ball joint that the Rubber boot is supposed to protect.
Can the boot be purchased separately and if so from whom. Hopefully they would be better than what was on the tire rod ends I got from Moss Motors.
