Hello, all. Need a bit of help on sourcing a replacement antenna.

Broke the telescoping, steel antenna on my MGB, and it seems that Moss and VB don't sell one that will fit this car. The ones depicted in both the Moss and VB catalog seem to require up to 9" depth. Plus, I'd like to replace this one with one exactly like it if possible.

Please see pic, below. Can't install one that extends below the fender surface.

Also, I don't want a rubber or electric retractable one.

Ideas??

Thanks a million.

Why can't you install one that extends below the fender surface?

“Ideological certainty easily degenerates into an insistence upon ignorance". Daniel Patrick Moynihan

In any debate, the side which strays from civil discussion is usually the side that lacks confidence in its debate position or in the merit of their arguments. Making personal attacks on the opponents instead of staying on the subject is also a sign of weakness.

Anyone who feels compelled to respond in kind to any perceived slight is often suffering from narcissism.

Bob, there seems to be a major obstruction just below the antenna mounting base.

And as we can see, the current, broken one does not much below the surface. Looks like I have maybe a few inches clearance.

Thanks.

That does seem to be further forward than the one on my '76. Is this on the passenger side?

Since Bs never came from the factory with an antenna, a generic one will do. Try your local car audio place.

I just put a new antenna on my 77. I got it at Advance Auto Parts, in the radio section. Some generic brand - it was like $9.99 I think. Sorry, I didn't really pay much attention.

The PO had one of those rubber wooby ones on there. eye rolling smiley

Mine looks just like the one in your pic.

Good luck,
Pete

A lot of the cars on the 80's had one piece 31 inch whips that did not extend more than the fitting. Might try the junk yard or just google antennas.

Mark - Just go to Pep Boys , AutoZone etc. You will find ones that look the same as what you show. The 'pain' is that you cannot attach a new mast to the base that you have to unplug from the radio and route the new wire and insert the rocking grippers, then attach the 3 top fittings.

A tip for good performance, is to make sure that the base has a good connection to the body, via those little spikes. How I do it is to sand the underside down to metal, install the antenna, then spray paint over it all to seal the metal.
