I was fortunate enough to be invited to a photo shoot for the UK based Classic Car Weekly newspaper. The article celebrates 50 years of the "Rover V8" engine. The editor has given permission for the article to be reproduced on the MG V8 Register web site. Here is a link to the article for those interested:

I believe Lloyd Faust also had an early conversion.

I think you need to change your topic title to BOPR (Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Rover for the uninitiated) as it's the R(over) that's 50 yo not the BOP. Hard to believe that which is in my GT is essentially that old!

I believe Rover "discovered" the engine whilst visiting the Mercury Marine factory in the early 1960's. It's an engine I have grown up with via my late mothers Rover P5B, the early Range Rovers plus a 5 ltr derivative sitting in my TVR Griffith. I could be interested in a good chrome bumper MGB GT V8 one day.

"plus a 5 ltr derivative sitting in my TVR Griffith."
How similar is that to my Chimaera 5 litre derivative - sitting in my GT?

Barrie,
Probably the same specification engine. The Chimera 500 was a rare car, most of the TVR Power tuned V8 were gradually increased in capacity from 4.0 then 4.2 and finally 5.0. TVR claimed the 500 V8s were good for 320 bhp but in reality most of the standard "500" engines are around the 270 bhp level which is fine for a car weighing 1,000 kilos, rear wheel drive and no modern driver aids.
TVR Power still exists and they offer 3 year / 100k mile warranty on their rebuilt Rover based V8's which is pretty impressive plus they can increase the power output even further.

Bought my Rover for that engine thinking it would get swapped into one of my MGBs. After driving it for a little decided it was too nice to scrap and too rare (only ~2000 sold in USA and one source says only about 400 still on the road). It is a rolling project and has handled some longish road trips (ie-Garys run to northern Washington and to ABFM in Portland). Definitely not a car you meet another of on the road. My engine is upgraded just enough for my tastes with 3.9 heads, a fast road cam and Holley 4-bbl.
