Just ordered full Moss interior kit (panels, carpets, seat cushions/covers, etc.) and decided to install Hushmat as well. Have the entire interior stripped and before I start putting it all back together again, I wanted to know what else I should do before doing so:

-Lubricate window operations
-Seal/paint the floorboards

Other postings have been great for details on install help (as many of the Moss instructions are tough to follow, if they exist at all)......looking for suggestions on tips/tricks for what I should do before installing the Hushmat, carpets and putting it all back together again.

One trick I've seen on some press cars (many years ago) is to paint the area on the body between trim panels the same colour as the trim panel. This way any gaps are not so obvious e.g. red paint showing through gaps between black trim panels. Another trick is to use a flocked / furry tape on panels and bits of trim so where they touch there won't be any squeeks or rattles. Teflon spray can be used in the same way. Wiring harnesses in the cabin are often wrapped in cloth tape for the same reason (PVC is used else where to keep water out).

Dittos. I painted the interior of my TR6 black for the very same reason: the color of the interior carpets was black (outside is Laurel Green).

  • Put some oil inside on the bottom of the doors to prevent rust from any water that gets by the window seals.
  • I've also heard of sealing the back of the door panels to prevent water damage.
I've never done it, but maybe a coat of polyurethane?
  • Put some anti-sieze on the bolts holding the seat rails to the floor
  • Don't put any type of Amour-all on your new panels or dash. It's just a big dust magnet.

813-3669The above are all good ones. I put doubt and heat insulation under the carpet on the firewall, the floor, and the entire rear cockpit area. I have also installed insulation into the door areas and stuffed it down inside the vertical triangular areas behind the seats. It makes an amazing difference in terms of both the quietness of the ride and the amount of heat from the exhaust system below the driver's seat.

I'm not a purist, so I've made numerous other changes.

I also changed out my window crank winders for chrome ones with a red and black MG octagon logo.

I don't particularly like the armrest on late model MGBs so I'm swapping those out for chrome earlier type door pulls.

I also installed a real rosewood dash kit which really dresses up the dashboard. I'm in process of making a set of rosewood door cappings to match it. Further, for my door speakers, I'm making bezels out of real Rosewood since the magnets are so big that without standing them out a bit they would hit the window regulators.

Additionally, I mounted my chrome toggle overdrive switch on my shift boot and put on a red leather shift boot with black piping. I installed a matching red leather with black piping boot over my emergency brake handle.

I like MG octagons in my car so I'm installed some early type Chrome ones with the separate M and G and octagon on the door panels.

I like a good sound system that will play top quality music so I'm putting in and 8-speaker surround sound system with a updated AM-FM-CD-AUX-Bluetooth system that fits into the original MGB radio opening.

I have since replaced my door panels, kick panels, and rear cockpit panels with ones that have red piping and map pockets everywhere. My seat backs both have very large map pockets. All of these eliminate the problems of storage inside an MGB.

This may sound a bit over the edge, but this is my "anything goes" project and I've been working on it for about 10 years. It's as much my hobby as it is my favorite MGB -- and it's definitely that.

My next project when finishing it is to repaint it again including painting the front and rear bumpers in a matching color similar to what Nikki Sheldon has done to his.

While the seat frame is 'empty', sand & paint gloss black. It looks rather tacky with rusty frame showing under new covers.

Read about the seat frames too late. I was impatient and already recovered the seats.
