Looks like someone indiscriminately painted the entire underside (including wheel wells) with undercoating.
My brother did that to my A when he was using it to go back and forth to college in the mid-70's. I can confirm that it is a bear to work on. Everywhere you touch or lean against, you get black tar on you.

Being from the East Coast of Canada, where everything rusts, even while in dry storage, the undercoating is a plus for me. This is a nice diver level car that will probably sell for way less than you could build it for. I've been toying with the idea of restoring a rusty A that's local. This makes me re-think that plan.

Uninformative description in my view. I'd almost go to look at it, but my eye is on that black BMW 2002.
No oil pressure specs, no compression specs, no evidence that the sills and pillars were repaired. (body off or not off restoration?) No description how the gears work. Saying a "mechanical overhaul" 20 years ago is pretty meaningless. That undercoat can hide a lot of sins. The battery box is not original so this had rusted out some.
I wrote up a critique, but must have decided that discretion was the better part of valor at the very last minute and didn't hit send.

One could consider making a low bid , but what if you actually win at a great price? Fine but then what if the seller decides to back out? I carefully read the BAT agreement 9 months ago and it said something along the lines of - you're credit card is going to be charged the commission period. No refunds. I did hear a rumor that someone did back out of a deal based on a false vin plate and they might have got the BAT commission refunded. They took photos and documented the issue. If the seller backs out and wants to say you never came to pick up the car I don't think BAT has the resources to see what happened. Seems risky to hope on winning a BAT auction if the deal is too good. Seems like you could just be out $600.
