Does anyone know whether the 17155 or 16878 Isuzu starter fits in a 1976 1500 Midget, and if so what if any modifications are needed?I have read several postings on this issue, but not one conclusively answers the question. I read that the 16878 fits the GT6 but one of the modifications is that the mounting plate needs to be shaved down to about half its size. See http://www.teglerizer.com/triumphstuff/73gt6br_tropperstarter.htm. I also read that if it fits the GT6 it "should" fit the 1500. I have read the 17155 is an exact fit but the postings saying so were not dealing with a 1500, and I am not sure whether the mounting plate needs to be shaved even though the starter is an exact fit. See http://www.mgexp.com/phorum/read.php?3,3087193. Can someone please help?
Thanks,
John S.

The second thread that you linked to above was mine and applies to A-Series engines. Not sure if the starters in the 1500's are the same or different. The Isuzu starter that I used did not require any adjustment to fit onto the engine.

Sean, did you use the mounting plate and shim when you installed the Isuzu starter?
Peter, yes I am still having starter issues. You can see how I am trying to resolve them. I am stumped and cannot explain the voltage drop nor the reason why the current starter sounds fine except when it is about to starter the car it sounds like its dying. Yes, you read correctly. The starter sound fine but only when the car is not going to start. When its about to start, the starter sounds like the starter is dying. Go figure.
Thanks guys for your help.

John, This has been quite a saga, and I can't recall everything, but, let me "translate" what you just wrote? The starter spins fine, but when the car ignition is energized the starter really slows down. Is that close? If so, if your ignition timing is overly advanced, the engine/starter display exactly that symptom..... a chug, chugging like it is struggling. Try retarding the distributor?

Didn't use any shims or mounting plates, just mounted it up as it came out of the box. Maybe I got lucky... worked for me.
