Lovely!

I can't figure out why the colourized look is so appealing but I do like it. The exercise room is a stitch!

With todays air travel, we tend to forget how many people moved around by ship in the old days.

When I was a kid (early 50s), I went back and forth across the Irish Sea by boat from the Ireland to the UK many times.

My Dad came to Canada on the Arosa Star (from Ireland) in 1956 (my Mum and I came a few months later in a Lockheed Constellation).
My aunt, uncle and cousin went from the UK to Argentina by ship the same year. Their ship broke down and they had to await repairs in the Azores for at least two weeks! And later they came to America by ship.
Another friend "sort of" came from Hong Kong to the US by ship in the 50s (she's pretty sure she was conceived on the ship grinning smiley )
Other relatives went to South Africa and Australia by ship.

Here's the Arosa Star my Dad came to Canada came in (we came to the USA in a Dodge.....LOL!).
It eventually ran aground off the coast of California and I think the hull is still there.

Very interesting read Nial, thank you!

Lovely isn't it? They really bring to life how elegant such a ship was. I travelled back from the USA on the Queen Mary 2 for my honeymoon. 10 hours in a plane economy class or 7 days on a luxurious ship? hhmmm!

I found some information on the Arosa Star. She did indeed beach near Port Hueneme and was looted, and eventually arsoned. After a sightsee-er died due to falling from the wreck the government acted and chopped her top where she lay, but interestingly she was transformed into a new arm for the Port of Hueneme breakwater when they filled the carcass with rocks.

Thanks Iwan, very interesting. The colourized photos do have a certain dramatic effect. I was interested in images of third class/steerage accommodations and came across this.

In 1959 I sailed with my family from Cuenevaca Mexico to Brooklyn NY. We were in a stateroom on a cargo ship. Our only stop was Havana!! We spent about 2 days there loading and unloading freight. This was in September, Castro had taken control and there were soldiers everywhere. He was still trying to work with the US, and hadn't turned to the USSR yet.
2 years later we saw our ship on the news, caught up in the blockade set up outside Cuban waters by the US to halt the importation of arms from Russia.

Those are great!

My sister and her husband are on a 2 1/2 month cruise from Seattle to San Diego the long way, counter clockwise around the Pacific Rim. They should be docking in Japan today, and will be on a side trip to The Great Wall next week.

My brother-in-law writes for shipping periodicals, so it's partially a business trip.
